URINARY INCONTINENCE IN OUR PETS

Involuntary passing of urine is a common problem usually in older dogs and sometimes cats.

Urinary incontinence means that the pet cannot totally control its ability to urinate.

Typically, urinary incontinence causes a leaky bladder. Clinical signs often seen include finding wet spots.

Involuntary passage of urine normally occurs while your pet is asleep or resting. When they stand up, you will notice urine leakage.

It can be just a small wet spot or a good size puddle, depending on how much urine is being unintentionally passed.

Other times you might notice a problem, for example, when your pet jumps up on the couch and spills a bit of urine, or they dribble a little while walking through the house or as they are running during play. It’s important to understand your pet isn’t intentionally leaking urine.

Causes of Urinary Incontinence

There is a lot of cause for involuntary passing of urine, especially in dogs.

Central nervous system trauma – if you’re pet’s brain or spinal cord isn’t signaling correctly, and miscommunication can cause urine dribbling.

Damage to the pudendal nerve – this is a problem of the lower back in dogs, including arthritis, degenerative joint disease or trauma to the lower back.

Disease of the bladder, kidneys or adrenals e.g.: Cushing’s disease.

Bladder Stones – A dog with bladder stones will often strain while trying to urinate with not much success in passing any urine, which may lead to urine leaking out when they return inside.

Birth defects - Structural abnormalities existing from birth, this can cause issues when you are trying to house.

Urethral obstruction – Obstruction of the urethra can also cause involuntary passing of urine. A stone in your pet’s urethra is a medical emergency.

Age related urinary incontinence – older pets can develop weak pelvic muscles, and this can cause leaking.

Or if your dog has signs of canine senility or dementia, they can simply forget to go outside, or if their bladder can become over filled there can be leakage.

First, a thorough physical examination with your vet is needed. Other causes of urinary problems, such as bladder infections and diabetes, must be ruled out.
